Hot Tools: 4 Hits and 1 Miss

Here are some of YEG's hairstylists' favourite hot tools! And one that was a bit of a miss. I've been in need of new hot tools for quite some time so I thought why not ask the pros! Let us know what your favourite hot tools are in the comment section below.

Sutra Styling Wand --Sherry Nelson, The Loft Hair Establishment @theloft_hairestablishment

Have you ever left the salon, after receiving beautiful flat iron curls? And then you go home, and try to do them on your own, and they don't turn out anything close to how your stylist's?

Then the Sutra styling wand is for you! It allows you to get those stunning ribbon curls without having to navigate your flatiron. It has four heat settings so you can use the one best for your hair. The tourmaline plates help to protect the integrity of your hair, while smoothing out the frizzy stuff.

Sutra Blowout Brush --Lisa Boutin, The Loft Hair Establishment @theloft_hairestablishment

I love the Sutra blow out brush SO much. It's like a round brush and blowdryer all in one. I dry my hair 80% with my blow dryer then use the blow brush to finish the job. You can take a fairly large section and it goes pretty quick. It's so amazing that I don't even have to touch up my hair with a flat iron after. It leaves me with soft, bouncy, voluminous hair.

Hot Tools 24K Gold Curling Iron -Sarah Attivi, La Belle Couleur Inc @sarahannhair

This is my favourite hot tool. Why?

It comes in a variety of sizes perfect for all hair lengths. Heat control makes it easy to adjust for different density and texture. I also love how it smooths out frizz and is versatile .

Hot tip: turn it all the way up, wrap hair around without opening the clip and you have a wand !

Dyson Airwrap Linda Ledrew, Linda Ledrew Hair @lindaledrew When I first saw the Airwrap advertisement I was excited to hear that you could curl your hair without extremes heat. I thought that meant no heat. Sadly that isn’t true. You do need to use heat to get a good curl.

The pros about the Airwrap are that it’s fun to use. You can dry and curl in less time because it doubles as a small blow dryer and dries hair fast! My hair felt and looked like I had a blowout done.

The cons are:

-It took awhile to curl my hair since sections cannot be too large.

-If you want to rotate curl pattern you have to change the attachment for each direction, which takes more time.

-To curl your hair on days when you're not washing you have to spritz it with water and then curl it.

-The tool is essentially a hair dryer so it is noisy. If your getting ready in the morning and want to quietly curl your hair this isn’t the tool for you.

The biggest disappointment for me was that my curls did not last into the evening, I had to re curl my hair with my curling iron The airwrap says that it curls hair with 150 C or lower heat, a lot of curling irons on the market today have digital control. I am currently curling my hair with 149C heat. Nobody needs 400C on their hair.

I only had device for a few days, I would need to try it for 6 months or more to see if my hair could be healthier using the airwrap then a traditional curling iron.

My current opinion is that it is too expensive for what you get. I would really need to use it long term to say if it is worth the investment.
